Daily Wisdom: Today we had the two mottos of South Carolina. They are Dum spiro, spero, which means “While I breathe, I hope,” and Animis opibusque parati, which means “Ready in spirit and resources.”

Latin I today discussed the dative case and looked at various examples of it in sentences. Then, we completed a derivatives worksheet and worked on a sententias scribe, which is due tomorrow. Students also received an extra credit vocabulary assignment, which is due on 12/22.

Latin II in 6th period today read dies festus II and then turned in the questions that they answered last night. Then we went over the forms of the demonstratives hic and ille and found examples of them in the readings. We orally practiced changing the demonstrative in each sentence. Students are to write out the example sentences in Part D on p. 144. They must translate the sentence into English and then rewrite the Latin sentence changing the demonstrative from hic to ille and vice versa. They also must complete exercise 19.3 on the worksheet that they received at the end of class.

Latin II in 7th period today finished reading fortuna crudelis, and then students turned in the questions that they answered last night. Students then received the vocabulary list for the semester exam as well as the extra credit vocabulary assignment. For homework, students should complete exercises 20.5 and 20.8 (both sides of the handout that they received today).

Latin III turned in their assignment from yesterday (practicing the future tense). Then, we read in aula Domitiani I. Tonight, students must answer the questions on p. 261.

Latin IV/V in 1st period discussed the remaining questions that went with the Pro Caelio. In 3rd period, we discussed the semester exam, and students received the vocabulary list for the exam as well as the vocabulary extra credit assignment. We also decided that prior to the day of the exam, we would have a test over the vocabulary words. This will take place on Thursday, December 17.

Welcome back!

Posted in Assignments, Extra Credit on August 24th, 2009 by Jeffrey Satriano

Salvete, omnes! Welcome back to Leon, and welcome (back) to Latin.

Today, in all periods, we went over the usual first day drill, including the handing out of various forms. Students in every period (except 4th) received a course description that includes class policies, grade distribution, etc, as well as a letter detailing the Latin club (Rebus Gestis) and another letter discussing competition. Students should give all of these forms to their parents. The Student Information sheet should be signed by both the student and his/her parent/guardian, and the information on the back should be filled out. Please write neatly, so that I can easily read the e-mail addresses.

Students, this is your first assignment! I need this completed and returned to me by September 4!

Students in 4th period received a number of other handouts from the school and attendance office. These forms should be shown to your parents. The blue Health and Emergency Information sheet as well as your signed Code of Conduct receipt are due to me by Friday.

Finally, a word about Latin club dues. Students who bring their dues this week will get extra credit. Students who bring their dues next week will get 75% of that extra credit, and so on until the final due date, which is September 23.
