Latin II took the Stage 16 test today.

Latin II Advanced reviewed various grammar points from dies festus part 2, e.g. verb tenses and noun cases. Then, we discussed the declension of the demonstrative adjectives hic, haec, hoc and ille, illa, illud. We practiced identifying the case, number, and gender of these adjectives in the stories we’ve read and also practiced changing from hic to ille and vice versa. Finally, we finished up by practicing with new sentences in which students had to choose the correct form of the adjective to go with the noun given. There is a vocabulary quiz tomorrow.

Latin III read part 1 of the Masada story on pp. 172-173. It is a rather long and difficult story, so it took the entire period. There is no homework except to study for tomorrow’s vocabulary quiz.

Latin IV/V took the Stage 42 test.

AP Vergil finished up the packet of workbook exercises. Students will receive two more workbook lessons tomorrow. We have two more workbook lessons to finish and a take-home test before we get back to reading.

Latin II today read over Quintus de se on p. 79 and reviewed various verb forms and noun cases in the story. Then, we completed a crossword puzzle to review for tomorrow’s Stage 16 test. The final vocabulary quiz for Stage 16 will take place on Friday.

Latin II Advanced today discussed derivatives of the vocabulary words and then read part 2 of dies festus on p. 142. Students are to complete the comprehension questions for homework.

Latin III today finished reading nox on pp. 169-170. Then we took notes on the passive voice and students completed questions 5-8 on exercise 29.2 for homework.

Latin IV/V today received back their Latin Poetry culture readings. Then, we played a game to review for tomorrow’s test.

After today’s vocabulary quiz, AP Vergil went over last night’s workbook exercises. Students should complete the remaining exercises for homework tonight.

Latin II had a lot to cover today. After the vocabulary quiz, we finally had the chance to go over the 16.6 worksheet sorting verb tenses. Then, we also discussed compounds of sum and how they conjugate in the present and imperfect tenses. Next, we reviewed ways of asking questions. For homework, students should translate Quintus de se on p. 79.

Latin II Advanced completed the 19.1 worksheet to practice genitive endings. Then, we read Aristo on p. 140 and discussed the Vocabulary Checklist words for Stage 19. Vocab quizzes will take place this Friday, then next Tuesday and the following Thursday or Friday. We also read part 1 of dies festus on p. 141.

Latin III went over the Model Sentences in Stage 29, and then read lines 1-21 of nox on pp. 169-170 and answered questions 1-4 of exercise 29.2. The first quiz over Stage 29 vocabulary words will be on Friday. The second quiz will be next Tuesday, and the final quiz on Thursday or Friday of next week.

After the vocab quiz, Latin IV/V went over derivatives for words in the Stage 42 Vocabulary Checklist and completed the Word Study.

AP Vergil went over the Vergil Workbook exercises that were assigned yesterday and then completed several more.

After going over the homework, Latin II again reviewed conjugating verbs and discussed which parts of a verb are used for each tense as well as which tense signs are used. Students then worked to complete Exercise 16.6 by sorting verbs into the correct tense columns. We also discussed the Stage 16 test, which will be on Thursday, October 7. There is a vocabulary quiz tomorrow.

Latin II Advanced went over last week’s Stage 18 test and then began Stage 19 by reading the model sentences.

Latin III began Stage 29 by completing the Cultural Background reading on pp. 183-188. The questions that go along with the reading are due on Wednesday, October 6.

Latin IV/V practiced identifying forms of the irregular verbs we went over on Friday. Then, we discussed the upcoming Stage 42 test, which is on Thursday, October 7.

AP went over the assigned lines from Friday after taking the vocabulary quiz. Then, students received review exercises from the Vergil Workbook to work on for homework.

Daily Wisdom: Today we had the mottos of Oregon and of Puerto Rico. Oregon’s motto is Alis volat propriis, which means “She flies with her own wings.” Puerto Rico’s is Joannes est nomen eius, which means “John is his name,” and is taken from the story of the birth of John the Baptist in the Bible.

Latin I today read in palaestra and turned in the questions from p. 147. We also looked at the words on the Vocabulary Checklist and discussed derivatives. Students voted to have the Stage 9 Vocabulary Quiz on Friday. For tonight, I suggested that students make their flashcards for Stage 9 and study the words every day as well as finish their vocabulary make-up assignment.

Latin II in 6th period today discussed derivatives from the Word Study on p. 159, and then we completed two exercises together, 19.1 to review genitive endings, and 19.11 to learn more derivatives and vocabulary. Then, we read dies festus I on p. 141. Students are to complete dies festus II on p. 142 and answer the questions on p. 143 for homework.

Latin II in 7th period today went over the Word Study on p. 181. Then, we discussed present active participles, which we learned about yesterday, and completed an exercise (20.2) as a class to practice identifying and translating participles. Finally, we read fortuna crudelis on pp. 167-168. We made it through line 24 in class. Students should complete the remaining lines and answer the questions on p. 169 for homework.

Latin III today finished reading Tychicus on pp. 257-258, and then we discussed the future tense. For homework, students received a worksheet to practice forming the future tense. The first Stage 33 Vocabulary quiz is tomorrow.

Latin IV/V in 1st period finished the Pro Caelio readings and should answer the questions associated with parts IV, V, and VI. 3rd period Latin IV/V took the Pro Caelio test today.

All classes took the Daily Wisdoms quiz today.

Latin I finished going over the Model Sentences in Stage 9 (pp. 142-144) and read thermae on p. 145. For homework, students should read in palaestra on p. 146 and write out the answers to the questions on p. 147. The test corrections are due Wednesday.

Latin II in 6th period today discussed the life of Aristo, which we read about on Friday, and then went over derivatives for the vocabulary words in Stage 19. The Stage 19 vocabulary quiz will take place on Monday, December 14. The words can be found on p. 160.

7th period Latin II went over the Stage 20 Vocabulary Checklist on p. 182 and discussed possible English derivatives of the Latin words. The Stage 20 vocabulary quiz will be on Friday, December 11.

The Stage 33 vocabulary quizzes for Latin III will take place on Wednesday, December 9, and Friday, December 11. In 2nd period, we discussed derivatives of the words in the Stage 33 Vocabulary Checklist and read the Model Sentences on p. 256. Then, we sight read lines 1-17 of Tychicus on p. 257. Students are to translate through line 30 on p. 258 for tomorrow. In 5th period, we read lines 1-17 of Tychicus, which students prepared over the weekend, and then we sight read through line 30. Students are to complete the remainder of the lines for tomorrow.

Latin IV/V in 1st period today finished reading Part V. Students are to complete part VI for tomorrow. In 3rd period, we discussed tomorrow’s test over the Pro Caelio.
